Crabs in a Bucket

In my late twenties, my wife and I were taking some classes about investing in real estate. They told a story of how when you put one crab in a bucket, it could climb out on its own. But if you put more than one crab in the bucket, they would pull each other down if they attempted to climb out.

The Sun Also Rises

Last Thursday, my grandma in Costa Rica passed away. My brother and I saw my mom that evening to see how she was holding up. She was doing a lot better than I thought she would. My grandma had lived a long interesting life, so you could make the argument that it wasn’t as tragic as if someone younger had passed.

Oh, the HuManatee!

When I was a kid, my dad started a short-term gig in Florida. We might have been there for only a few months, but I remember learning about and falling in love with manatees. These passive marine behemoths just struck me as extremely sweet. I remember seeing their backs all torn up by boat motors, and my heart went out to them.

Manners Can Be Fun

My son laughed the other day when we were driving when after telling my phone to create a note, I thanked Siri, which I do all the time. But it’s not just me placating our soon-to-be robotic overlords before their uprising. No, I think it’s good to maintain good habits, politeness being one of them.

The Dark Side

Long ago, while working at a past job, I had a coworker across the cubical from me. We would chat about things, but one common thing she mentioned was how the weeks when she had her daughter, all she could think about was going to the club. But when her ex had the daughter, she missed her so much.

100% Responsibility

Last week, I wrote about expecting little out of others. You can’t expect others to see your viewpoint. Don’t think everyone will remember your birthday. Things won’t always go your way.

Great… Expectations

A friend from out of town and I were driving, and he hooked a thumb out at Taco Cabana and asked, “Is that any good?” I had such good memories of Taco Cabana back in the day. We don’t frequent it so much lately, but I remember loving the freshly made tortillas and chicken flautas. Loading up on cilantro from the salsa bar. Even their margaritas were surprisingly good.

He Did Not Disappoint

The other day I was wearing a shirt with Stan Lee on it, and my coworker commented that I was even cooler now. And really, I’m sure that anyone familiar with the Marvel movies loved seeing his cameos. Being a comic book fan since I was a kid, I have loved Stan Lee for the majority of my life.

Last, Last Earth Day

When we arrived in Hawai’i my wife and I had racked up a ton of points on our credit card. Enough points to spend a few weeks at a hotel as we looked for more permanent lodging. The hotel we stayed at had a nice pool with a hot tub that occasionally worked, free snow cones a few times a week, and daily activities.
