Hey, I hope everyone went out and voted today for a libertarian candidate so we can break the tyrannical two-party system that we have in our country.

Enough of politics! What I came here to talk to you about today was creating affirmations. Basically, no matter how strong-willed you are, you will be influenced by things in your life. The real idea is why not sit down write down what your life to be like, what values you aspire to have and then brainwash yourself repeating these things.

Think about people that join cults. They might be impressionable to start out with but they get indoctrinated to a belief system and internalize it.

Imagine doing the same thing with your own mind. Who do you trust more than yourself? Tell yourself you are who you want to be and over time you will believe you are that thing.

Here is an example that worked for me in my life. When I started in real estate my wife and I were once told to call ourselves real estate investors. At first we were unsure but eventually, we internalized it and then did some great work.

How we made our money. By drawing it!

How we made our money. By drawing it!

I don’t know if you had the same experience in your childhood where other people (parents or teachers) noticed your skills and would comment on them. In my case, people fawned over my art. I internalized the idea that I was an artist and it is what I identify with even now. People might have said you were shy or even something negative about you and maybe it effects you know to this day. Maybe it is something you told yourself later in life. Maybe you have some doubts about yourself or your abilities. But I am here to tell you, you can change all that.

My wife wrote her affirmations down some time ago and repeated them daily. She went so far as to record herself saying the affirmations so she could play it back and just agree with herself.

The change in her overall attitude is noticeable. Which is amazing that just a few minutes a day repeating some words she could affect her perception of the world around her and find the same world a better, more enjoyable place to live.

While I have not done this for myself my homework and the homework for everyone who reads this is to come back to class next week having written down some affirmations. Write what you want for your future in the present tense. You can actually see what my wife wrote here for inspiration.

For my Christian friends, I realize this is New Age thinking however let me say I do not think this detracts from the Bible.

“What do you mean, ‘If I can’?” Jesus asked. “Anything is possible if a person believes.”
— Mark 9:23 New Living Translation

So go out, imagine the best for yourself AND GO BELIEVE IT!
